Gender and Society

Gender and sexuality shape social, cultural, economic, and political life across Chinese societies, both historically and in the contemporary world. The Gender and Society Research Cluster examines how gender norms, identities, and relations are constructed, negotiated, and transformed within changing social and institutional contexts. Particular attention is given to the ways gender intersects with structures of power and inequality, shapes individual experiences and collective identities, and informs cultural representations and political debates. Drawing on interdisciplinary, comparative, and historical perspectives, this research cluster explores both the persistence of gender hierarchies and the possibilities for social change across Chinese societies worldwide.
