On February 15, 2025, a 3v3 Chinese political debate competition was jointly organized by the Chinese Debating Club and the Pre-Law Association of Duke Kunshan University, with the sponsorship of the CSCC. The competition centered around the topic of “Policy Debate: Should we promote laws and regulations for taking in and rescue stray animals in Jiangsu?“, triggering intense debates. It attracted the participation of many teachers and students, creating a lively atmosphere at the scene.

At the beginning, the host introduced the three professional judges, namely Zhou Guangda, a 24th – grade philosophy postgraduate at Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Wu Yiheng, former president of Debate Club of Suzhou Foreign Language School, and Wu Wenrui, a representative of the Chinese Debating Club at Duke Kunshan University. These judges have rich experience and profound knowledge in the field of debate. This competition adopted the Oregon debate format, strictly following the “5 – 4 – 4” speaking time rule, with each session proceeding in an orderly manner.

During the debate, the affirmative side expounded on the necessity of promoting relevant laws and regulations in Jiangsu from the aspects of animal welfare and the progress of social civilization. The negative side refuted from perspectives such as social resource allocation and implementation difficulties. Both sides presented rigorous logic and sufficient arguments, demonstrating excellent debate skills and solid knowledge reserves, winning rounds of applause from the audience.
In the judge’s comment session, the three judges conducted detailed analysis and professional guidance from multiple dimensions, including argumentation points, evidence, reasoning, and teamwork, which benefited both the debaters and the audience. In the audience voting session, the on – site audience actively participated by scanning the QR code to vote for their favorite team.
Ultimately, after comprehensively considering the judges’ scores and the audience’s votes, the negative side won the competition with a clearer logical framework, more persuasive arguments, and better teamwork. The affirmative debaters also performed outstandingly, leaving a deep impression on everyone.

This debate competition not only provided a stage for the debaters to showcase themselves but also enhanced students’ attention and reflection on social issues, creating a favorable academic exchange atmosphere. It is expected that Duke Kunshan University will host more such activities in the future to continue to stimulate students’ enthusiasm for critical thinking and improve their comprehensive qualities.
