Background
Gathering the Cracks began in 2024 as a CSCC-funded Community Service Project titled Transitions & Traditions in Bacheng, led by Prof. Kaley Clements. The project set out to document Bacheng at a moment of transition, as traditional shipping barge activity is gradually being phased out, reshaping the local environment, community life, and their interconnections.
Rather than presenting a fixed interpretation of change, the project approaches Bacheng with an awareness that external perspectives may not fully reflect how the community understands its own transformations. With this in mind, its aim is to witness, document, and share these ongoing changes with care and attentiveness.
At the same time, the project creates opportunities for learning through engagement with local residents, situating DKU participants not as outside observers but as members of the broader Kunshan community. In doing so, it seeks to deepen understanding of place, culture, and lived experience during a period of transition.
