About the Masterclass
The Screening Series “Negotiating Modernity” looks at three important issues — Between City and Village, Between Men and Women, Between Mainland China and Hong Kong — that concern modern day Mainland China, using mostly Hong Kong films as a starting point of discussion. Presented through three semesters, the screenings had resulted in very interesting and meaningful discussions on the topics.
At the conclusion of the series, this lecture will look back at the nine films and examine the three issues, on how they evolve over the years, how they relate to each other and how they point to the future of Mainland China and Hong Kong. The lecture will also examine the Hong Kong film industry, its relationship with Mainland China’s cinematic landscape, and the anticipated development of both industries looking ahead.
