Description

Designing AI Policies in Higher Education: A Comparative Checklist for Policymakers is a culminating event of a broader student-initiated research and engagement effort on AI governance in higher education. Building on earlier stages of the project, including the development of a preliminary checklist, prior events, poster presentations, and newsletter-style dissemination, the April 28 event will serve as a synthesis point where research findings are brought into direct conversation with institutional practice. Like all previous events, this is not only meant to present outcomes, but to create an accessible, interdisciplinary platform that connects research, campus dialogue, and practical impact for the DKU community.

About the CSCC Student-Initiated Research and Creative Inquiry Project:

Bridging Global Perspectives: A Comparative Study of AI Academic Policies in Higher Education and Their Implications for Contemporary China and the World

Summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) integration in higher education presents transformative opportunities and challenges for global academic institutions (International Day of Education, 2025). Guided by UNESCO’s 2023 Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research (Miao & Holmes, 2023) and the Beijing Consensus on AI and Education (UNESCO, 2019), this project conducts a comparative analysis of AI governance frameworks in higher education across China, the U.S., and global institutions. By synthesizing public policy documents and institutional reports, the study aims at identifying emerging trends and proposes a conceptual framework to inform ethical AI policy development at Duke Kunshan University (DKU).

Aligned with the CSCC’s mission, this research critically examines China’s evolving role in AI governance and its implications for global educational equity, technological ethics, and sustainable development. AI education policies in China emphasize infrastructure development, governmentled training programs, and the strategic implementation of AI in education. A comparative assessment of China’s AI policies with those of the U.S. and other global institutions will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of different governance models and their broader implications for higher education worldwide.
